4 Month Check Up

Caitlyn had her 4 month check up yesterday and it didn't quite go as planned. While the doctor said Caitlyn is thriving and hitting all her developmental milestones, she isn't gaining weight as much as she should. She is still in the 69th percentile for her height and her head circumference is good but her weight dropped from the 36th percentile to the 10th. Not the news I wanted to hear, but somewhat expected. Since we got back from California, she has been really fussy when eating and I was worried she wasn't getting enough to eat. Plus everyone always comments on how small she is for her age.

Starting yesterday, I am now on the "triple feed" plan. Every 3 hours (yes, even in the middle of the night) for the next two weeks I have to breastfeed Caitlyn for 10-15 minutes on each side and then offer her a supplemental bottle until she's had her fill. This is followed by a pumping session for at least 5 minutes on each side. And best of all? I can't use a pacifier - "only nutritive sucking". It is a daunting and exhausting task to say the least and I would be lying if I didn't tell you I've cursed the doctor's good name a few times. The entire process takes me about an hour, leaving me 2 hours to try and get my normal chores done and/or sleep. I am sorely missing the pacifier. Without it Caitlyn does not want to take naps or even sleep at night. Assuming I still have my sanity then, we go back for a follow up in 2 weeks. The goal will be for Caitlyn to gain about 14 ounces. She's been eating like a champ, so keep your fingers crossed!
